The Techiman Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Jobila M. Zakari has called on stakeholders to expedite action on the creation of the Bono Nkwantananso Cultural Centre. Mr. Jobila said that such a centre will serve as a safe abode for the cultural relics of the area.

The NCCE Director made the call during a radio discussion on Free FM, a private radio station in Techiman with Nana Antwi Bosiako, the Chief of  Kenten in the Techiman Traditional Area.

Mr. Jobila said the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has the mandate to sensitize the people to preserve and protect places of historical interest and artifacts in accordance with Article 39 (4) of the 1992 Constitution.

He stated that the creation of the Nkwantananso Cultural  Centre in the modern day Bono capital in Techiman was a necessity to showcase all cultural materials of the Bono people. He added that Bono State has produced a lot of rich cultural heritage dating back to 800 years ago.

Mr. Jobila said the Bono State was very instrumental in major ancient trade activities of both Trans Sahara trade and Trans-Atlantic Slave trade with complex social and economic systems emanating from chieftaincy dominance, migration, social organization, craft production and systems of religious and cultural practices.

The NCCE Director said the artifacts of the Bono State are in no doubt being showcased in international museums, thereby generating revenues for those who do not deserve it. He said the construction of the Nkwantananso Cultural Centre will not only preserve the cultural artifacts of the Bono people but will also serve as a revenue generation vehicle which will contribute to the educational and cultural fortunes of the people.

Contributing to the discussion, Nana Antwi Bosanko said a site has been earmarked for the Nkwantananso Cultural Centre project. He added that efforts are being made to get the project executed to pave way for cultural and musical performances, drama, symposia, lectures, seminars, exhibitions and a living demonstration of the visual arts including textiles and basket weaving, wood  carving, bead making as well as Blacksmithing.

The chief further stated that the ecotourism facilities around the Techiman Traditional Area are deeply seated in taboos and cultural beliefs with unforgiving function. He warned against tampering with the crocodiles in the Atweredaa stream since they are lesser gods.
